Bug reporting

Found a bug? Open an Issue on GitHub. The more details you give us, the faster we can squash it (and the less we can blame you).

Feature enhancements

Got an idea for a new feature? Open an Issue on GitHub. Describe your idea clearly, and we'll debate its merits with the team.

Code contribution

Ready to ship a fix? Submit your Pull Request (PR). You can also look for issues tagged good first issue or help wanted to get started.

Help us steer its evolution. We trust you (mostly).

Frequently asked questions

Even genius-level systems prompt a few basic questions. We cover the fundamental architecture, token philosophy, and common errors here, so you can stop guessing and get back to building.

Getting started

What is Recursica?

Recursica is a free and open-source design system developed by Border UX to accelerate digital product design. It provides Figma community files, a Figma plugin, and adapters for React components, enabling designers and developers to create consistent and accessible digital products efficiently.

Is Recursica truly open-source? What's the catch?

There is no catch. Recursica is entirely open-source. You can download, use, and modify it to suit your project's needs without any cost.

How do I get started with Recursica?

There is a proper way to set everything up. Our team will walk you through it at no cost. To start using Recursica, visit our Get started page.

Why are there multiple Figma files that make up the design system?

There are multiple Figma files (Tokens, Brand, & UI Kit) to not only keep things semantic, but to save you money with Figma.

We separated Tokens (your base colors/sizes) because as you establish your project’s brand, these styles will rarely need to change.

While building this system, we realized Figma limits variable modes (themes) on its non-Enterprise plans. By keeping the Brand file separate, you can duplicate it to create unlimited themes without paying for a costly upgrade.

Compatibility & integration

Can Recursica integrate with version control systems?

Yes, Recursica offers full integration with GitHub and GitLab. The Figma plugin acts as a bridge, publishing variables directly into your code repository, eliminating manual handoffs and ensuring a perfect 1:1 translation from design to code.

What adapters does Recursica support?

We’re currently working on supporting a variety of adapters. Check out our roadmap to see all of the adapters we’re building.
